If it helps anyone else, I have managed to work out how to do this by using a couple of plug-ins - 'User Role Editor' and 'Authors Page'. User Role editor can create the custom roles and Authors Page uses short code to place them in the page automatically. Works very well.

Is there a way to create a page showing all authors profiles by specific categories. i.e. my client will have approximately 20 authors from several countries and I need to create a page listing their profiles in order of country. I have see a plug in that you can add fields to authors details (so I can add 'Country') but am unsure how to achieve the above page layout split by country. 

Do you know if this is possible?
