Yeah, of course, our theme is compatible with the new block widgets from WordPress.
That's why I said with you check with the plugins you're using - it seems you're using a plugin that caused the conflict with the new block widgets from WordPress.

I can use the classic widget plugin, but that is supported and maintained until at least 2022. So I'm wondering if this is a sustainable solution..

I think you're using a plugin doesn't compatible with the latest version of WordPress, so maybe you should check again with your plugins ( by deactivate each plugin to check ).
Or another way is simpler: Using plugin Classic Widgets to go back to the old widget editor.

After the latest theme + WP update the widget section is changed.
When I adjust a widget and click on 'update', I get a jason error.
