Hi,
1/ This issue caused by you did change colors for your categories display between featured images & posts title to white color - check this image. So you can't see it => this make the space large.
If you don't want to display categories there, you can hide it via Customize > Other Layouts Options > Hide Categories.
If you want to display categories there, you should go to Customize > Colors for Other Layouts > and change colors for categories to another colors you can see.
2/ You can change it via Dashboard > Settings > Reading > Blog pages show at most

1.There is a lot of space between the thumbnail of my post and the title of the post. Where in the css code can I edit that?
2. there are an uneven amount of posts showing up -- it will list 5 and then you have to go to the next page. I want 6 to show at a time.
