I've doubled check this issue on my testing site but haven't found the issue with the caption text.
The problem maybe that one of your installed plugins has modified the caption HTML output of WordPress.
Please try to disable all plugins (exclude the plugins that come with PenNews) then re-activated one by one to check which plugin cause this issue.
