You can change the default avatar by going to Settings → Discussion → Default Avatar.

i found the code and added to my child theme to edit, but i'm thinking the easiest way might be to just make the default avatar a white box so that it looks like nothing. will look into where to change that.

It may not be built in, but if i wanted to dig into the code myself to do this, where would i find it? and would I add that file to a child theme?

Unfortunately, the current version of Soledad does not include an option to customize this area. However, we will consider adding this feature in a future theme update.

I'm wondering what file I need to edit so that I can hide the author avatar in the author box when the author has no image set. Would I create a child theme? Is it in the functions php? I don't want to create a default icon, would rather it only appear when there is an image set.
