Our Custom Post Type was built with Toolset... Besides the design, The Toolset feature was the main reason why we bought Soledad recently.
Is PenNews compatible with Toolset?

By default, this theme doesn't supports for custom post type.
But, this theme is compatible with Toolset plugin - I think you can give it a try.
Check documentation for Toolset & Soledad theme here
Also, for better for Custom Post Type, you should use our theme PenNews - it already supports for Custom Post Type"Build Query" button from PenNews supports for most everything from Custom Post Type.

Three minor issues/questions related to Custom Post Type (CPT):
1) Can CPT be displayed on the homepage as regular posts, sorted by category? (In our case CPT are only visible on the archive page of a category.
2) In the archive page it is not possible to see a an image on these CPT? I can't attach a featured image on our CPT. e.g. http://wpmlu.hangarflying.eu/category/militair/ (3rd item is an CPT)
3) Is it possible to configure a sidebar to the CPT? (either a custom sidebar or none). e.g. http://wpmlu.hangarflying.eu/impressie/nh90s-naar-mali-met-een-antonov-124/ when clicking on image I want the "beeld-impressie" to have no sidebar to display the photo as large as possible.
