Hi,
Have 2 ways to help you do that:
\1/ Go to Customize > Standard & Classic Layout Options > and check on "Auto Render Excerpt"
\2/ Do following this image to create continue reading button for your 1st Standard Posts.

I am utilizing Homepage Layout "1st Standard Then Grid 2 Columns", just like the demo page http://soledad.pencidesign.com/, however, my 1st Standard article won't trim off and put a "Continue Reading" link (it just shows the whole article.
