Please try deactivate all plugins and try it again.
After it work, let's enable each plugin to know what's plugin caused this issue.

I unchecked the box in the theme settings but it’s still not working. Any place I might be missing it?

Hi,
\This issue caused by you've enable lazyload images from Jetpack plugin or use a plugin for make lazyload - Let's deactivate that.
\This theme already supports for lazyload images feature - so, you don't need to use anymore plugin for lazyload images.

I followed the steps but none of the 'featured' images are loading into the placeholders. Not on the homepage and not on post pages.
